The authors of the two notebooks of “Receipts” or as we would say today “Recipes” for cures lived in the tiny Norfolk village of Little Snoring. See the village website link above for much more information and photographs. The two ladies you see here were Mrs Phoebe Tuck and her daughter Sarah Ann. Mrs Tuck was a member of the prolific Tuddenham family who once owned and lived the The White House in Little Snoring.
Mrs Tuck’s first husband (a horse breaker, and a bit of a character) may have added to the notebooks as there are a number of remedies for horses, cows, dogs and sheep. The remainder tell us about the ailments suffered by 19th century villagers, including Smallpox, Tuberculosis, and “costiveness” which was constipation.
I repeat, that none of these remedies should be tried!
Hi, I love this new site!! I’m excited to find out what the remedies are. I’m certainly going to subscribe.
