An “apothecary” learned the trade as an apprentice. They were trained to recognize the many plants used in preparing medicines and were responsible for keeping fresh supplies of the necessary herbs. Medicines were made from plants, berries, roots and bark and in many cases are actually grown by the apothecary. The ingredients and instructions for preparation and use were kept in a journal. Some were beneficial while others were based on superstition and false beliefs.
